A Fresh Start
Published six times a year for almost eight years by the Global Association of
Risk Professionals, the GARP Risk Review has become a familiar presence in the
community so ably served by GARP and its global, standard-setting certifica-
tion mission. The GRR established itself as an independent voice and indis-
pensible resource for rigorous inquiry on the risk discipline and for exchanges
of views among practitioners. As turmoil has swept the global economy and
financial markets, GRR has stepped up with timely analyses of the breakdown
of tried-and-true assumptions and with examinations of the state of the risk
profession.

In view of the marketplace upheavals and in keeping with its expansive view
of the future of risk management, GARP is remaking the Risk Review. The
February 2009 issue will be GRR’s last, though its voice and commitment
will in no way diminish. You are looking at a special preview of the new Risk
Professional magazine, which will take its predecessor’s place effective with the
April 2009 edition. It is emblematic of a more extensive GARP media strat-
egy. Details will be emerging soon at www.garp.com and in e-mails to our
readers about that strategy, aimed at improving and enhancing the way we
engage with and serve readers, in print and online, while raising the quality
and usefulness of the conversations that take place throughout the wider risk
community.
This preview edition provides a glimpse of some new directions Risk Professional
will take – a variety of features and columns on leaders and personalities in
the field and the issues and challenges they face. Take, for example, the cover
story on “The Rise of the Risk Professional,” which documents the growing
stature of risk managers even as they are buffeted by market forces they didn’t
see coming. Look for more of this kind of insight and perspective, starting in
April. As always, we will welcome your feedback and input.
